Got the preamp in and have been playing around with it. It sounds great! A captured spectrum analysis confirmed all the reviews I read about its low end and clarity, but actually hearing it was something totally different! You weren't kidding about it's beefiness, damn. After comparing it to my other preamps, the highs are so much smoother, the low end is much tighter, and the overall balance and clarity is just amazing. Thank you for a great product! - Jim Wheeler, USA
Man, am I impressed by your kits!! Fell in love with the X-12 at my first listen.. Warm, big, punchy... Im glad you guys are out there!! Keep up the good work!! - Fredrik L, Sweden
I bought an x12 about a month ago and i've finally gotten to play around with it a little bit and i have to say that it's killer on my snare with a Sennheiser e604. I'm actually selling my A-Designs P-1 and i'm thinking of picking up some more of your units. - Roy H, Canada
I've received the preamp and I have to say that YOU ROCK !! Just amazing units! I will put a very good feedback on Ebay because you really deserve it. Best wishes for 2010. - Paris Lle-de-France, France
If you want a good sounding preamp with little risk or ambiguity (no sourcing of parts) the Five Fish SC-1 are wonderful meaty units for little money. - Garrett Haines, Recording Tips Editor, Tape Op, Chief Mastering Engineer, Treelady Studios www.treelady.com
Just got my pre-built x12.. its totally rock solid. Messed around with it a little today, great addition to any collection of preamps. I compared it directly between the API 512c, and Purple Pants. Its somewhere between the two sonically. The 512 is a little more raspy, with those signature grainy upper mids, the x12 had a little of that with a more focused bottom end like the Pants. No DI included, but it loves to amp the Countryman DI, and was very similar to the API in sonics with this test. I like the meter, its handy. The construction is top-notch, solid knobs and switches, good illumination. You can get in there and swap out the IC for a DOA, etc.. but I think the transformers are making the "sound". Oh yeah, its quiet too. What else.. I noticed that some mics sounded almost the same between 512 and x12, others sounded very different. I'll have to do more extensive testing on this to figure out which mics work well, and which ones don't. Maybe its an impedance thing. Anyway, I am really interested in the x72 now, could also be a winner!! - www.bendymusic.com, post on LunchboxHero.com
I have a Shadow Hills Mono Gama, Avedis MA5, Five Fish SC-1mk500, and Chandler Germanium. While I love the other pres for other things, the Five Fish is my favorite on my voice with the SM7b. It seems a tad more open and it sits in the mix better for some reason. - post by PlayRadioPlay! on Gearslutz.com
By Eddie Ciletti. With the state of today's economy, it's hard to predict (or have confidence in) the days ahead. Looking into my silicon crystal ball, your passion for knowledge and the declining value of a dollar tell me there might be a D.I.Y. kit on your holiday gift list this year. And there are a lot of reasons to love these kits: They teach us almost as much about our retail gear as they do about D.I.Y.
fivefishstudios: troubleshooted a noisy preamp... can't see anything wrong, so I replaced Input Transformers and that fixed it. Weird.
fivefishstudios: Mr. Brown dropped by. 500 Series Front panels and 3-deck switches delivered! No transformers yet.
fivefishstudios: Ordering parts, re-stocking parts. Price of components have gone up, and a lot are backordered at different places. NOT GOOD!
fivefishstudios: @mvaughan408 Maybe not in small rural churches. Some ppl don't even know they're in an SBC church. Re:DISAGREE! Not the case in the south.
