Howdy,

I was referred to this site today. I'm just getting started with home recording, and I want to upgrade from my Presonus TubePre preamps. It was suggested I strongly consider the DIY method. I was hoping for some advice...

My goal is to record one or two tracks at a time to a Boss BR-600 multi-track recorder. It's a cool little unit. I play acoustic guitar and mandolin, and I do vocals as well. I use condenser mics for everything (so far); I've never liked the sound of an amplified acoustic...

With that in mind, which option should I go with here? What is the primary difference between the X and the SC?

Thanks!

The SC-1 (without the trafo) is more along the lines of clean and crystal sound. I think this will be good for your acoustic guitar... if that's the type of sound you're after.

You can add a bit of flavor (low end, silkier highs) by getting the SC-1 with the input trafo.

The X-12 is more beefier in flavor (warmer) due to the use of input/output trafos. They're more inspired by an API design but I've added my own improvements like VU meter, option to use IC opamp or Discrete opamp, use of high-speed buffer, etc.

Either one will suit your purpose. Just depends on the sound flavor you're going for.
