Using heatshrink on cables is a good idea. It prevents the wire from flexing too much (which could lead eventually to severing the wires). It also provides insulation. It looks nicer too. Pick the right diameter heatshrink. If you use a too-big a diameter heatshrink, then it may not "shrink" sufficiently to hold your wires. When using heatshrink with wires, don't forget to put the heatshrink on the wire BEFORE soldering. Move it a few inches further away from the point of solder. Otherwise, the conducted heat will shrink the tube closest to the solder point. To shrink the wire, you could use your soldering hot-air pencil, or those "hot-air" blower you use for basket gift-wrapping, or a heatgun (the latter may be overkill). A hair-dryer set on hot setting will also work.
