I received today the new PSU boards! Much earlier than I expected.

I built one power supply to test if the board is working and everything is A.O.K.

The new board features (3) on-board mini Fuses, each with it's own LED lamp. One fuse and LED lamp for the V+, V- and 48V rail respectively.

The Voltage Regulators I'm using have built-in short circuit protection. However, sometimes that is still not enough and the voltage regulator suffers failure if you had an accidental short while wiring/building your project.

The only way to remedy the situation is to de-solder the Voltage Regulators and solder in a new one. What a hassle!

With this new PSU design, if there is a short circuit somewhere down the line, the on-board PSU fuses will open immediately. At a glance, you'll know which fuse is open because the LED lamp corresponding to that fuse will be not lit up. All you need to do to make it work again is replace the fuse. And you have a working PSU again.

I tested the operation by intentionally shorting the +48V rail, and the +/-24V rails. The fuse immediately opens up, and the LED lamp turns off signifying there is a problem with that fuse.

The new PSU kits have additional parts so I will have to re-order some parts and pack them to go with the new kits. I estimate the new PSU kits will be ready sometime the last week of May... or maybe a week earlier.

I'll post a picture later.

Photo of new PSU-2448mk2 Power Supply Kit

Has (3) on-board fuses with LED indicators.
If all (3) LED lamps are lit up, everything is good. All systems go.

Now, we intentionally create a short circuit by shorting the +48V voltage rail to Ground.
Poof! Fuse blows, and LED lamp for the +48V fuse is OFF - meaning, there was a short circuit somewhere and this fuse needs replacement.

Remove the short-circuit we created during this demo, and replace the fuse with a brand new one.
Voila! LED is lit up again - meaning, our +48V line is working again.

NOTE: We didn't damage the voltage regulator, didn't have to desolder it, or replace it with a new one. We just pop-out the old fuse and replace it with a new fuse.

Cost of fuse = $0.10
Time to fix = 2 seconds
Peace of mind knowing that you won't have to desolder a 3-pin device and solder it again, and risk damaging your PCB while you fight to get the old voltage regulator out.... Priceless! :)
