okay, so an API project is a little weird because it is mainly tranfos and a discrete op amp.

There are lots of combos based on this design - different opamps such as the melcor discrete and the john hardy 990 and others | different tranfos - from expensive jensens to more budget friendly (and still great sounding from what I hear!) cinemag...

But, who can resist trying to build a classic? I think if Owel could supply boards that could do a few different combinations there would be some interest. might be easier for builders to just buy their own tranfo instead of making owel spend 1000's on iron...maybe chassis mount tranfo's would allow for more combo's

this is a project i wanted to start on my own a while ago and that many have taken on. I would like to see who would be interested...

I'll definitely think about it... it is so tempting to build this one because it's so easy.

BTW... we might as well even call it a Sony-MXP type circuit, because it's also the same configuration... with a Jensen input trafo but without the output trafo (because it's a mixer channel strip).

The same "API" circuit configuration can also be found on the Jensen website.

BTW... did you know that Cinemag and Jensen are related?

Ed Reichenbach (the father) founded Jensen, and Tom Reichenbach (the son) founded Cinemag. But both worked together until 1979 when Tom (the son) formed Cinemag. I think Cinemag in it's early days used to be in Jensen's facility until it outgrew it.

i think i knew something of the sort...

when i contacted cinemag and said something about it being cheap:

----------------------------
"Cheap"??? lol :-) We like to say that "the best
costs less."
---------------------------

I have heard some say "jensen at half the price"

here are some Cinemag part numbers for those interested. I took the prices out because he could have changed them:

The CM-75101A or CM-75101APC is a very nice
choice for this preamp. It actually is the
transformer of choice for the professionals who are
upgrading API consoles because it does have a nice
"voice." The closest to the original (and the choice
of the engineer who did the original API work) is the
CMMI-8PCA .

Most people are using the CMOQ-2S all steel
lamination output transformer.
