So I turned the power trafo and that cut down on almost all the crazy noise it let off at first.

but I have to crank the gain all the way up to hear anything come through and even then it's faint...

here's a sample

(click tiny headphones to stream)

any ideas of what I should try first?

Yes, look for shorts or open connection.

Check your wiring between the SC-1 preamp and Mini-IO module. Follow this wiring diagram.

ok, after a long while of despair and limited funds...

a friend of mine graciously offered to fix it up for me. he did a pretty good job considering that it didn't pass signal before I gave it to him. he had it working good, but when I got it back I experienced random crackling noises. it seems separate from the input jack or volume control. while the crackling is going on I can't trim it or change the loudness (and it's REALLY loud at times). in the moments the crackling is not taking place it sounds super good. I think i might like it better than my API 312. I need to hear it for a longer period of time. I'm planning on A,B,C-ing my 3 good pres. the fivefish, api a2d, and the Black lion audio Auteur.

I'm sure I'm being really vague, but just let me know what I should check or any additional info that would help. should I just look for loose connections? is there a best way to go about that?

thanks,
- Jeff

Your IC1 is probably damaged... try replacing it.

ok I don't want to be annoying, but the chip next to "IC1" on the circuit board says "THAT 1646"

is the number on the chip of no significance/am I looking at the wrong one?

The very topmost IC is IC1.

THAT 1646 is IC4

ok, 887-1510P08-U is ordered.

i was just confused because in the image you posted and on my board you can see "THAT 1646" and the label "IC1" right next to each other.

I hope I'm not coming across as a smart ass. I'm just confused. if the spot next to "IC1" there lays a chip that says 1646 that spot is not, in fact, IC1... then well I just don't know where to put the 887-1510P08-U

Wait, are we talking about the SC-1mk3 or the DI module? It's been a long.

The DI module. I have the pre and DI, so are you referring to the topmost socket on the pre? the one simply labeled "preamp" on the board?

I think the problem is IC1 (1510) on the preamp board. The part link I gave you is correct.
