No, I never heard the sound of the noise. The link posted above is TV static that was NOT generated by the SC-1.

Also please note: The trim knob is an attenuator. The normal position for this knob is all the way clockwise to the right, which is the 0dB mark. Adjust the preamp gain via the 12-step step switch.

Only at the higher gains (54, 60,66,72) should you turn back the trim knob from it's 0dB setting if you need to dial it down for less gain. At those high gain settings, you're talking about 500x, 1000x, 2000x amplification and there is no "middle ground." The trim knob takes care of dialing it down a bit.

Hope this clarifies what the trim knob does.

I always wondered... would it have been possible to have the trim knob just attenuate between the 6dB increments?

I.E.- At the 60dB setting, fully clockwise would be 60dB and fully counter-clockwise would be 54dB.

Could be that I'm missing the point and that it's better to be able to have full gain control with just the trim pot while the selector switch is turned to the maximum necessary gain setting.

Yeah, that would be cool. Even if the trim knob was a 6 step knob, from +0 dBs to +6 dBs...
