For the wires providing power, I bought "thermostat" wiring, but it looks kind of too thin and I'm not certain it's a big enough gauge. Would it suffice? If not, what kind of wiring should I purchase and where could I find it online?

Also, I have yet to purchase wiring for the XLR connectors. Where can I find good, high quality wiring?

shaare, I'm not sure what you mean by "thermostat" wire.

The minimum I would use is a AWG#22 stranded copper wire. If you want a little bit thicker, you can use a AWG#20.

They're about $5.00 for a 100 feet roll. See this link.

Then type "22AWG Stranded"

As for the shielded cable for the XLR connectors, check either one of these:

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I just ordered both. I hope AWG #22 is good enough.

#22 or #20 AWG stranded is what I personally use. It will be fine.

For mic cable I have been using this

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl ... er=100-246

it has foil shield so it is much more flexible than real mic cable, I was having trouble with the real mic stuff putting too much stress on soldered connections and breaking

It has a drain wire which is nice too...

this is unless owel thinks real mic cable is better for internal connections?

Check out Fry's for different color hookup wire if you want to go to a real store...

Thanks Luke. That's perfectly fine. That's what I use too.

I also use broken down TRS cables and salvaged the wire. (I just cut the plugs).

On my latest prototype, I just used ordinary stranded wires to hookup the XLR connectors, just twisted the 3 wires together with each other. It didn't seem to have any effect on noise... which I'm really pleased as the PCB layout and design means the pre is resistant to RF/EMI.

I got "full core" Velleman mounting wire cable. Is this wire the opposite of stranded?

Yes, that's "solid", the opposite of "stranded" wires.

And that won't work?

It will work. Stranded wires are just easier to work with since they are not stiff. If you look at my prototypes, I used solid copper wires for it.

solid won't take as much bending, but it is easier to work with IMO

would someone be able to have a look on here and let me know what type of wire would be best for me to use? for hookup and also for the mic lines if possible?

thanks!
