More than met expectations! PDF Print E-mail
I must say that the preamp has more than met my expectations.  I wanted to get a 3124, but didn't because I didn't have $2400.  I simply wanted one channel of *that sound* or something similar enough to give me an overhead mic that was punchy on drums, or could act as a second mic on other acoustic instruments for a different flavor that could be mixed in.  Well as it stands after hearing it, the X-12 has now taken a front seat with everything I'll record from now on!  I will probably get a second one eventually. Great job!  I'm very pleased with it.

First, I wanted to let you know that I did get the X-12 preamp working...thank you for your coaching with the final steps.

Second, I must say that the preamp has more than met my expectations.  Ultimately I wanted to get a 3124, but didn't because I didn't have $2400 to throw down on a rack unit of preamps.  At this stage in the game for me and my studio, I simply wanted one channel of *that sound* or something similar enough to give me an overhead mic that was punchy on drums, or could act as a second mic on other acoustic instruments for a different flavor that could be mixed in.

Well as it stands after hearing it, the X-12 has now taken a front seat with everything I'll record from now on!  I will probably get a second one eventually, in fact.

So here's an objective testimonial/observance for the X-12 preamp...my wife, who has done some singing on my recordings and has heard my stuff overall as I've done it, recently listened to me playback vocal tracks I did over an acoustic song I recorded, just voice and guitar, shaker & piano.  All the instrument tracks were recorded with a 2-610 preamp, into a BLUE Kiwi microphone.  Then I recorded another vocal take, also with the BLUE Kiwi, but this time with the X-12 preamp.

When I A/B'd the two vocal takes for my wife--the Uxxxxxxx Axxxxx track vs. the X-12 track--she listened to them both a couple times, not knowing which one was which, then a couple times without the music, and said she preferred the second one--which was the X-12!

Now, she would be the first to admit that her ears are not as fine-tuned as mine, that she doesn't really notice that many sonic differences and kind of listens to everything as a whole.

But she did describe the X-12 vocal take as more present, saying that it stood out more than the 2-610 vocal take within the rough mix I had going.

Granted, the X-12 is a solid state preamp and the 2-610 is tube, so you'd expect there to be SOME sonic differences between the two units.  But I didn't expect my wife, much more of a casual listener than me,  to notice the difference between the two in favor of the X-12.

So in a nutshell, great job!  I'm very pleased with it.

This is my own version of a classic preamp, popular in the 70s and still popular today. It's not a clone since I'm using a totally different signal path and design, and different input and output transformers. But the sound nevertheless is awesome.  Big and beefy with lots of transformer mojo goodness.
